Plateforme Traite at the 2025 Asylum and Migration Movement Congress

Reclaim mobility, freedom, rights. Under this motto, a two-day congress on asylum and migration took place on 28 and 29 November 2025 at the PROGR cultural centre in Bern. The Plateforme Traite held a workshop on human trafficking in the asylum sector at the congress.

More and more victims of human trafficking are arriving in Switzerland as refugees and ending up in the asylum system. Their situation is worrying: they are in a vulnerable position and need special protection. However, victim protection is severely restricted in the asylum procedure – they do not have the same rights as those affected by immigration law. What happens to these people in the asylum system? And how can people working in the asylum sector recognise whether someone might be affected?

The workshop provides an initial overview of human trafficking in the context of flight and asylum. It explains causes and mechanisms, highlights the current situation in the asylum sector and shows what to look out for. Concrete options for action in suspected cases are presented with the aim of enabling those affected to exercise their rights and be better protected.

The Plateforme Traite has also written an article on ‘Protecting victims of human trafficking in the asylum system’ for the Bulletin of Solidarité sans frontières. The text can be downloaded here.
